Everything you've ever wanted to learn and know about Digital Camera megapixels, but were too afraid to even ask...

A walk through history class…
Megapixels, which represents 1 million pixels, are a unit of measurement within an image.
The more pixels that you have, the higher the resolution (or sharpness) your images will have.

To use an analogue of dots – which in essence, an image is made out of – then the more densely the dots are accumulated together, the better your picture quality.

The number of mega pixels will determine the quality of your final photo. The higher the resolution, the higher the quality and image size of your resulting images. and the faster you will fill up your memory card. Higher quality photos also take up more space on your media card.

For starters, low res images are best viewed online, whilst higher resolution images are ideal for printing etc.

If you’re in the market for a digital camera, which I assume you are, or you wouldn’t be here right now glossing over this article, then here are a few tips which should hopefully aid you in choosing the right camera for your money.

2 Megapixels and below
Let’s face it, if you’re hunting for the 2 Megapixel budget camera, you might as well be using your cellphone or ipod with built in camera…ideal for the happy snappers who’ll take the behind of the office assistant when she’s not looking, and then show it to their mates or post it on myspace!

3 Megapixels
A good compromise from the above profile and we’re now beginning to see some decent quality 4×6 and 5×7 images that grandpa would be proud of.

4 Megapixels
You’re on a roll and this is probably your first serious digital camera… will not cause embarrassment when you whip it out at Wimbledon or as a substitute photographer at your son’s or daughter’s high school prom, assuming you were cool enough to be invited.

No compromise on picture quality here and we could push the envelop to develop a good quality 16×20 image here.

6 Megapixels and above
Huzzah!
The big guns of photography, aka the paparazzi! Your Nikon D80 SLR Camera fits in well into this category and chances are you take your digital photography seriously, no doubt there!

With a Digital SLP Camera with over 6 Megapixels, you’re guaranteed great image resolutions that the whole family will adore, whether for personal or commercial use.

Hope this guide has shed some light into the type of camera you should be searching for…

Happy snapping!

Digital cameras have many advantages and usages that are not possible with film, and the business and pleasure of photography has really come a long way since the first patent was issued for a camera in 1826.

Back then, the only two available options were 110 mm or 135 mm film cameras which required a separate flash for optimum resolution images.

How times have changed…

No more film and nosy developers
Today, no longer is it necessary to haphazardly take pictures and cross your fingers and hope you got the shots you really wanted. Nor is also necessary to make that special trip to have your special film processed by your nosy and gossipy developer who, out of the kindness of his heart and generous nature to be developing your film, may have shared your kodak moments of the trip to the Caspian Desert where you ended up sitting on a cactus plant in your super mad rush to the bathroom, and caught on film…with the rest of the staff!

You get the picture!

Unlimited Camera choices…
With the advent of Digital photography, the limit becomes your imagination!
Digital Cameras now come in all shapes, colors and sizes, some with amazing retractable lenses, whilst some have interchangeable lenses that can be used from one camera to the other of the same brand of camera.

Unlimited storage capacity

The advantages of using digital Cameras are great. You have that instant gratification with your pictures, which you can immediately see using the LCD screen your camera might have and, should you not be happy with the end result, there’s always the delete button and back to retaking the picture that would make the paparazzi green with envy!

Not withstanding the shutter speed, you literally have unlimited storage capacity of the pictures you can take, depending on the memory card you happen to be using. In today’s high tech environment, you can purchase SDHD memory with a capacity of up to 64GB!

That’s more capacity than most laptops on the market today will ever have!

No more squint eyes!
Remember when the only way you could take pictures was through a tiny viewfinder located right in the corner and you had to squint real hard to make sense of the image you were intending to take?

Well, thank goodness that’s a thing of the past now, because Digital cameras come with large LCD screens you can immediately use to position and capture your images. With this advantage comes the pesky paparazzi who can take overhead shots without looking through the lens! This is where you raise the camera over your head when you cannot visually see the target you’re intending to take a picture of.

Easy Photo Edit
First was the black and white film, then came the color film and photography was never the same again…then black and white film, like vinyl records, came at a premium price for those who desired them just because black and white pics are timeless and rare!

Well, hello software!

With the software available on the market today, such as Photoshop or illustrator, color pictures can be converted to black and white, red eye removal, backgrounds added or deleted, “other” people added to your photos etc…again, the limit here is your imagination!

All weather conditions…
With digital cameras, your sensor settings can be changed on the fly for each photo taken.

With a click of a button, your camera can be changed from indoor to outdoor mode, or vice-versa, low light to night photography etc. Some cameras, especially SLR (Single Lens Reflex) will automatically sense the light conditions and change the sensor mode accordingly. This is literally like changing a roll of film to the optimized for every photo you shoot – the best ISO, color features and more.

Diamonds are forever?…
Just as with diamonds, your digital photographs never lose their quality! A digital photo on disc will be in good quality and standing today as it will be in a millennium to come. As long as you refresh your digital media every now and then and back them up, your photos will literally last forever with no quality degradation.

Happy snapping!

If you've been on the market for any length of searching for a first time SLR Digital Camera as a present to yourself or a loved one...visit our site to read a review on probably the best Digital SLR Camera on the market...for all the right reasons!

Whatever level of expertise you may be or may have with digital photography, you will not be disappointed by the ingenuity in this camera.

Nikon D80 SLR Digital Camera

Originally introduced onto the market in September 2006 to replace the bulkier D70, the Nikon D80 SLR Digital Camera caused quite a stir amongst a lot of Nikon users..

Simply put, the Nikon D80 SLR Digital Camera was not just an upgrade from any of its predecessors, but a complete revolution in digital cameras!

For the first time in its history, Nikon had developed a camera whose combined parts embraced only those features that were considered the very best in the past models!

To say that the Nikon D80 SLR Digital Camera is a great camera is an understatement; a fact shared by most Nikon enthusiasts, from armature photographers looking for a compelling choice to purchase a SLR Digital camera, right through seasoned professionals who make a living through photography!

Nikon D80 SLR Digital Camera – Features

On close inspection, you immediately notice that the Nikon D80 SLR Digital Camera spots a 10.2-megapixel CCD image sensor optimized to capture sharp details; RAW and JPEG capture to be precise, with a burst mode that allows for capture of three frames per second for up to 100 pictures!

If you’re not familiar with RAW format capture, it’s an option on your SLR Camera that allows for the capture of images in RAW as it gives you so much more options of processing the photo afterwards. In short, Raw image files have a wider dynamic range or color gamut than your ordinary JPG images, whose resolution is usually limited by the size of the image saved on your memory card.

So you have more options to play with in the final development of your images.

Other Wow features include a High resolution processing engine from the Nikon D2X, the Nikon D200’s Multi CAM 1000 AF sensor module and a conspicuously large 2.5 inch rear LCD display with built-in slideshow options which can be viewed at a much wider angle, clearly redefine how one captures footage with or without a tripodon the fly.

The challenges of digital photography usually include memory capacity, especially when capturing large resolution images, which can take up much of your memory just before capturing your widowed Father-in-law’s most embarrassing moment as he trips over the wedding cake in his bid to capture the bouquet long before the wedding’s over!

Now that’s a theme of the past and digital photography’s been taken to a whole new level when Nikon re-designed the Nikon D80 SLR Digital Camera to support the new generation of Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) memory cards, which have capacities of up to 32GB!

With an exclusive hallmark of consistently dependable exposure, Nikon loaded the D80 with an advanced exposure evaluation system inherited from the Nikon D2Xs and D200 digital SLR cameras.

In a nutshell, common features such as brightness, color, contrast and camera-to-subject distance information are evaluated and referenced against Nikon’s expansive on board database of exposure data from well over 30,000 actual photographic scenes, with the final exposure value calculated – instantly!

Those who understand how difficult it can be to maximize available light to help achieve optimal exposure will instantly fall in love with the Nikon D80 SLR Digital Camera, which comes standard with ISO speeds of 100 and 1600 in 1/3-EV increments; a huge confidence booster for anyone who understands High ISO shooting!

This camera is excellent. It’s easy to use and allows you to do some fairly impressive and more advanced things in photography.
I upgraded to this camera and the clarity in each picture is startling. I just can’t wait to enlarge my photos to poster size. As you might imagine, I highly recommend this Camera to anyone who wants to do more that point and click even though you can do that and more quite well with the Nikon D80 SLR Digital Camera.
